Much like the John Hughes-written film itself, the Pretty in Pink soundtrack became a defining snapshot of 1980s youth culture. Its tracklist brings together some of the era’s most memorable alternative and New Wave artists, including Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), The Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, New Order, INXS, Echo & The Bunnymen, and Suzanne Vega.

Among the album’s highlights are The Psychedelic Furs’ “Pretty in Pink,” OMD’s “If You Leave,” The Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” Echo & The Bunnymen’s “Bring on the Dancing Horses,” and INXS’ “Do Wot You Do.” Suzanne Vega’s “Left of Center,” featuring Joe Jackson, Jesse Johnson’s “Get to Know Ya,” and New Order’s “Shell-Shock” also appear on the soundtrack.

Released in 1986, Pretty in Pink was written and executive-produced by Hughes, as part of his many iconic coming-of-age films, including The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Directed by Howard Deutch, the romantic comedy stars Molly Ringwald as Andie, a working-class high school student whose budding romance with wealthy classmate Blane, played by Andrew McCarthy, is complicated by their social differences and the pressures of their respective friend groups.

The film also stars Jon Cryer as Andie’s devoted best friend Duckie, alongside Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts, and James Spader. Four decades after its theatrical debut, Pretty in Pink remains one of Hughes’ signature teen films, with its New Wave-heavy soundtrack playing an enduring role in its legacy.
