‘Grand Theft Auto VI’s Extended Preview Was Netflix’s Most-Watched Weekly Title

Netflix / Grand Theft Auto VI

Grand Theft Auto VI continues to prove it will likely be one of the biggest video game releases of the century.

The most-watched title on Netflix last week wasn’t one of its series; that win went to the extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI.

Deadline reports that the 27-minute extended look at the highly anticipated video game, which showed off gameplay and pretty much proved that Rockstar Games is in a league of its own when it comes to making games, garnered over 31.1 million views globally over the weekend landing it in the no.1 spot on the streamers English film list globally and 87 of the 93 countries that Netflix tracks viewership numbers in.

The 27-minute preview premiered on Netflix on August 27 and was exclusive to the streaming service for six hours before it went live on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel, where it amassed 17 million views.

Those impressive numbers on Netflix pretty much confirmed how popular and in-demand GTA 6 is despite the initial backlash to Rockstar Games announcing the unconventional approach to showing off gameplay from the game.

At the time, Rockstar Games was hearing it from gamers because the studio decided to make the game a digital-only release, opting not to drop a physical edition and locking the gameplay trailer behind Netflix’s subscription paywall.

But it seems fans really wanted to see what Rockstar Games has been cooking, and happily booted up Netflix in eye-watering numbers.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Impact On The Entertainment Industry Is Astounding

Also worth noting is the effect this game has had since gameplay (entirely recorded on a base PS5) was shown.

According to numerous reports, retailers like Best Buy sold out of the PS5 Pro, and pre-orders for the game skyrocketed following the Netflix preview.

So basically, if it’s one thing you should never bet against, it’s the popularity of a Grand Theft Auto game.
