The impressively high-fidelity cinematic trailer showed off the different styles of the two main characters, shinobi Assassin Naoe and African samurai Yasuke. Yasuke was a real samurai who lived in Japan during the Sengoku period, the setting for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Naoe appears to play like your typical Assassin, using stealth, agility, and wits to outsmart her opponents and dance around them in battle. Yasuke, however, uses his strength and imposing armour to strike fear into his enemies and cut them down with ease. The pairing is reminiscent of Jacob and Evie Frye from Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.

At the start of the trailer, the pair appear to be on different sides of a battle. Yasuke and other samurai burn down a village that Naoe runs to protect. Later in the trailer they appear to be working together, though, so it is unclear what brings this pair together.

The trailer caption reads, “against the backdrop of the turbulent late Sengoku period, this remarkable duo will discover their common destiny as they usher in a new era for Japan.” So, perhaps some ancient technology left behind by the precursor race is what ends up uniting the pair.

At the time of writing, the trailer has almost four million views on YouTube, but has 230,000 dislikes compared to its 197,000 likes. Commenters seem annoyed Ubisoft is already advertising preorders for Shadows without showing any gameplay for it.

There are also comments stating the game will be a “rental”, seeming to refer to Ubisoft removing racing game The Crew from people’s digital libraries, a move which prompted a wave of player backlash and mistrust toward Ubisoft.

In other news, the official Alan Wake 2 soundtrack has been released.
