The HBO series concluded its third season last night (May 31), which creator Sam Levinson subsequently confirmed was the series finale following speculation that it could act as a swansong.

The episode ends in tragedy, with Rue (Zendaya) dying after suffering an overdose of painkillers laced with fentanyl. Amid a drug-induced haze, she sees her sisters and friends, as well as Fezco (played by the late Angus Cloud).

Rue is discovered by Ali, who goes on to take vengeance on Alamo by killing him. Meanwhile, Cassie and Maddy decide to turn Nate’s house into an influencer operation following his death last week, though Lexi declines an invitation to join as a “storyteller”.

Since airing, fans have taken to social media to share their reactions to the final episode, particularly Rue’s death, with a mixed verdict overall.

“Euphoria final ended with no main characters we’ve watched grow for years getting real endings, and Ali (a side character since the beginning) suddenly taking over the entire show. A MESS,” one shared on X.

“Rue dies, Nate dies, Jules paints a picture, Cassie is sad, Lexi regrets how she acted, Maddy is free I guess, Ali becomes the main character out of nowhere. What an absolute mess of a finale and season,” another echoed.

“Euphoria might have had the worst ending to any tv show ever,” a third suggested, a fourth adding: “Euphoria now joins The Boys, Stranger Things and Game Of Thrones as one of the worst final seasons ever in a show.”

“We watched Rue suffered nonstop, to have very little good happen to her, only to pass away in the end, is the definition of anticlimactic and stupid writing! she should have gotten a good ending and this is a horrible end to the show!” another said.

However, some were more positive, one person writing: “Unpopular opinion but the ending was good,” while another called it “a beautiful ending”.

Levinson has since spoken about the finale and Rue’s demise, telling The New York Times’ Popcast: “It just felt like the honest ending. The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it.”

He added: “People relapse. They fuck up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now, with the influx of fentanyl into this country.”

This season of Euphoria has proven controversial, particularly the show’s sudden emphasis on sex work focused around OnlyFans, sugar babies and strip clubs. There was a particular backlash against Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie dressed up as a baby and a dog for her online content, while there was also criticism from OnlyFans creators.
