Rick And Morty co-creator Dan Harmon has confirmed that the animated show’s first feature film is in the pipeline.

Reports about the project first emerged in May, after years of fan speculation about the possibility of taking Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith to the big screen.
Now, speaking to ScreenRant while promoting the forthcoming spin-off President Curtis, Harmon has confirmed that the film is indeed in the works, offering a glimpse into its current status.
“Oh, that is on Ruby on Rails, baby. That’ll be released next summer,” he joked, before clarifying: “But yeah, we’re picking away at that as a script right now, and the hope is to get that over to whoever we’re working for when we’re done writing that.”
Longtime series director Jacob Hair is attached to helm the film. He has worked on the show since its fourth season and serves as supervising director on the current ninth run. Confirming his involvement, Harmon has said: “We are now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works. Jacob Hair is the director.”
Harmon went on to explain that work on the film could continue alongside the television series because the production does not have to accommodate the schedules of live-action actors.
“That’s a lot easier because you don’t have to wrangle cartoons’ schedules,” he said. “They’re drawings of people, and so they’re all in as far as writing the script. That can be picked away at the same time as doing the show. Yeah, that’s what’s going on with that.”
The show is currently nearing the end of its ninth season. The finale, ‘Field Of Dreams’, will air on Adult Swim in the US this Sunday (July 26), before arriving on NOW and HBO Max in the UK on Monday (July 27).
President Curtis, meanwhile, will premiere on Adult Swim immediately after the US broadcast of the finale, with episodes reaching HBO Max the following day. Created by Harmon and James Siciliano, the spin-off stars Keith David as President Andre Curtis alongside Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash.
Meanwhile, the main series has already been renewed up until season 12, which is expected to keep it on air until at least 2029.
Zack Snyder had previously expressed an interest in directing a Rick And Morty film and offered to help get the project moving. He and James Gunn later made cameo appearances in the series, playing exaggerated versions of themselves and arguing about Gunn’s Superman.
“Word of advice – he’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation,” Snyder told Gunn in the episode. “Do more shots of him punching.”
