Samson: A Tyndalston Story is the first game from studio Liquid Swords, which was set-up by veteran developer Christofer Sundberg (Just Cause, Mad Max) in 2020.
The open-world single-player action game takes place in the fictional city of Tyndalston in the ‘90s and focuses on Samson. “He owes dangerous people more than he can pay, and they’re using his sister to force his hand. The clock is ticking. The only way out is through anyone who stands in his way,” reads the description. You’ll use a combination of brawling and vehicular combat throughout the game, as you try and earn enough money to pay off your debt.
“I’ve spent a large part of my career building massive games,” said Liquid Swords’ Sundberg. “With Samson, we knew that bigger doesn’t always equal better and had to be extremely deliberate in what we built. Samson is not bloated, it’s all about focus and we kept players at the centre of every decision. Fans of gritty ’90’s action flicks have something to look forward to.”
Jesper Kyd (Warhammer 40K: Darktide, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla) worked with Liquid Swords as Samson: A Tyndalston Story’s music director. You can listen to the moody, electric ‘Samson’s City’, the first song from the game’s original soundtrack, below.
Kyd told NME that the track was inspired by both the gritty city of Tyndalston and Samson’s return after some time away. “It’s about the feeling of being back where you’re supposed to be, but also the dread that comes after remembering all the shit that happened there. It’s his home and he has to learn to live with that.”
“‘Samson’s City’ is a good introduction to both Samson, and Tyndalston,” Kyd continued, with the song acting as a “springboard” for the rest of the soundtrack. Leaning into the ‘90s setting, Kyd took inspiration from trip-hop greats Massive Attack, Tricky and Earthling as well as hip-hop for the musical world of Tyndalston, while trying to keep it modern. “The goal was to create something that sounded like it could live in that trip hop era, but was still its own original thing.”
Samson: A Tyndalston Story launches April 8 for PC.
In other news, Record Store Day takes place next month and gamers can expect vinyl releases of Undertale, Cyberpunk 2077 and Pokémon soundtracks as part of the annual celebration.
