A new series of Adolescence is reportedly in development, with Kate Winslet linked to join as its star.

The Netflix series was released last year and starred Stephen Graham as a father dealing with the shock of his son (Owen Cooper) being suspected of murdering a female classmate. The show delved into subjects such as toxic masculinity and the manosphere, and was one of the most talked about shows of the year. As well as winning a raft of awards, including nine Emmys, the show was also said to have created discourse that led to the recent ban on social media for teenagers.

Now, MailOnline is reporting that a second series, following a new storyline, is in development with Winslet attached as the lead. The Oscar-winning star, known for films such as Titanic, The Reader, and the Avatar films, has also won praise on the small screen for miniseries such as Mare Of Easttown and The Regime.

The actor has also appeared in stories with similar themes, starring opposite her daughter Mia Threapleton in the drama I Am Ruth, about teenage depression caused by social media. A source for the tabloid said: “It’s happening and in development. There’s excitement that Kate’s on board.”

The producers of the show, Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters, said last March that “There’s the possibility of developing another story”. “A prequel to Adolescence, that’s certainly not going to happen,” Walters told Variety. “But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot and so much mileage in investing into human nature again and looking at something else.”

The following month, it was reported that Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company was looking into how a follow-up can “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive.”
