Russell Brand responds to widely-mocked Bible verse clip from Piers Morgan interview

Russell Brand has responded to the widely-mocked viral clip of him trying to find a Bible verse while being interviewed by Piers Morgan.

Appearing recently on the presenter’s Uncensored show last week, Morgan brought up Brand’s decision to take a Bible into court for a hearing earlier this year, which was confiscated in the dock.

The comedian is currently awaiting trial on counts of rape and sexual assault, having been charged in April 2025 against four women, while further charges against two women were brought in December. Brand has denied all claims and pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

While on Morgan’s show, the presenter asked: “Can I go back to asking you a question about your Bible? Is that the one you took into court? What was your thinking of taking it into court? And you were seen looking at some passages – what were the relevant passages?”

This is, hands down, the most uncomfortable two minutes I’ve watched in a long time. Russell Brand is asked to identify a Bible verse relevant to his, um, legal battles and spends a few minutes clumsily thumbing through Scripture and arrives at nothing. pic.twitter.com/KS0ZQTg6t2

Brand responded that it was “Isaiah”, though proceeded to awkwardly thumb through his Bible for nearly two minutes trying to find the verse. After eventually giving up, he said: “I can’t actually find the verse that I had that day but this is good enough. This is from Isaiah 12.”

Brand has now taken to X to respond to the much-derided clip – which one user called “one of the best uses of dead air ever” – sharing a video clip with a Bible.

“Wait! @piersmorgan I’ve found that verse!!” he wrote in the caption. “The really important thing is that we, you, me all of us are loved. And not because of anything we have accomplished or ever could achieve. But because of who loves us.”

He added in the clip: “I was on Piers Morgan the other day, I was looking for it and thought I should find the actual right passage, the exact one I was looking at when I was sat in the dock in the court.”

After reading from the bookmarked page and speaking further about the passage, Brand claimed that the “pressure of the circumstances” meant that he struggled to find it on Morgan’s show.

Wait! @piersmorgan I’ve found that verse!!

The really important thing is that we, you, me all of us are loved.

And not because of anything we have accomplished or ever could achieve.

Brand was originally meant to stand trial this June, though it has been delayed until October 12 at Southwark Crown Court to combine the charges brought in December 2025. The trial is expected to last around two months.

In a previous statement on the allegations last April, Brand denied the claims, saying: “I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord. I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity. I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes”.

He added: “I’m now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court, and I’m incredibly grateful for that.”

Meanwhile, the comedian recently admitted on The Megyn Kelly Show to sleeping with a 16-year-old when he was 30, acknowledging it as “exploitative”.

“The plain fact of it is that in Europe and in the United Kingdom, where I’m from, the age of consent is 16,” he said. “I did sleep with a 16-year-old when I was 30, but when I was 30, I was a very different person. I was a lot younger, and I was an immature 30-year-old.”

He added that “consensual sex with a variety of people when there is a strong power differential – because there is when you’re a famous man that has the ability to attract women that I had at that time – I think involves exploitation. I think it is exploitative.

“I recognize that my sexual conduct in the past was selfish and I did not apply enough consideration, barely any, I suppose, really, to how that sex was affecting other people.”
