Producer, Songwriter Shinsadong Tiger Dead at 41

K-pop lost a successful producer and songwriter on February 23, 2024.

Shinsadong Tiger (Lee Ho-yang) was found dead in his studio. Initial reports said an acquaintance found the 41-year-old in his home.

“It is correct that Shinsadong Tiger was found dead, but we are unable to provide further details, including time and place of death,” an officer at Gangnam Police Station said in a statement.

Known for producing the hit songs “Now” (Troublemaker), “Up & Down” (EXID), “Bboom Bboom” (Momoland), “No No No” (APINK), “Bubble Pop!” (HyunA), and “Roly-Poly” (T-ara), among others, Shinsadong Tiger was also behind the groups EXID through his former company, AB Entertainment, and Tri.be, who formed under TR Entertainment.

Tri.be, who just had their long-awaited comeback with “Diamond,” canceled two promotional events following Shinsadong Tiger’s death news. The girl group will continue activities next week.

“Although we are devastated by the sudden sad news, we ask for your support and encouragement to the Tri.be members who will continue their Diamond activities under the support of Shinsadong Tiger,” their label said.

While known as a hitmaker, Shinsadong Tiger did have his share of struggles. In 2017, Shinsadong Tiger experienced financial difficulties following a failed business venture, leading him to file for bankruptcy and debt relief.

In 2018, Russian group Serebro accused Shinsadong Tiger of plagiarism, claiming Momoland’s “Bboom Bboom” sounded like their song “Mi Mi Mi.”

In response to the accusation, Shinsadong Tiger and Beomi Nagi said, “The intro portion of the song can sound familiar due to the similarities in genre and guitar riffs, but the melody and chord progression are completely different [from ‘Mi Mi Mi’]. It seems that the misunderstanding arose from the fact that the bass line and 4-measure chord progression [used in the song] are common characteristics of the retro house and swing electronic genre.”

Despite the brief period of bad luck, Shinsadong Tiger was known for his kindness, generosity, and musical talents.

Before becoming a well-known songwriter, composer, and producer, Shinsadong Tiger dabbled in singing, having auditioned for JYP Entertainment in his younger days.

Shinsadong Tiger’s untimely death will leave a void in the K-pop industry. We send our condolences to his family and friends.
