Mary J. Blige is the latest established musician to embrace the use of generative AI in their creations, sparking outrage from critics. As the resistance to generative AI is consistently on the rise, Mary J. Blige’s endorsement of the practice has rubbed some fans the wrong way.
The actual reel itself appeared on Facebook and now only seems the full session in question appears on Suno’s Facebook page. In the clip, Mary J. Blige is in a studio being asked about what Suno is. She quickly ascertains that the program “AI’s” vocals and then puts out a song in that spirit.
Blige seems pleased with the results and appears to accept what the producers were able to create using her vocals as a backdrop. As it stands, the songs in the ad sound like what you’d expect the “Queen of Hip-Hop and R&B” to sing over.
The pushback online, however, has been intense. In recent times, musical acts such as Timbaland, Tyga, and most recently Dr. Dre have deeply embraced AI as a wave of the future. But the growing anti-AI sentiment, and how human creators are somewhat being frozen out of the industry in lieu of the technology is at odds with the wider acceptance from top musical acts.
A quick scan of Suno’s Instagram page shows no sign of the reel, nor could we find anything on its YouTube page. However, we did find the aforementioned Facebook page, which has the full session in question. We also included a video from Jermaine Dupri reacting to the reel below.
