The new DC outing features House Of The Dragon’s Milly Alcock as the titular superhero, aka Kara Zor-El, who joins forces with a companion for an interstellar journey of revenge.

It is the second instalment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe following last year’s Superman, and opened in cinemas over the weekend.

However, box office figures show it has only made $38million (£28million) in North America, as well as a total of $68million (£51million) globally. Supergirl also has a reported budget of over $170million (£128million), excluding marketing costs, with Variety reporting it would need to make $375million (£283million) to break even.

Its opening haul is less than Marvel’s flop Morbius, which made $39.1million (£29million) in its North American opening in 2022, and $84million (£63million) internationally, before taking a total haul of $167million (£126million) globally across its run.

The film, starring Jared Leto and Matt Smith, was overwhelmingly panned by critics, whereas Supergirl has attracted more middling reviews, while audiences gave it a B- score on CinemaScore.

Supergirl comes from director Craig Gillespie and writer Ana Nogueira, and also features Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, while Jason Momoa – who is known for playing Aquaman – portrays Lobo. David Corenswet also reprises his role as Superman.

The film is based on the Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

In NME’s three-star review of the film, we said: “Though the soundtrack features Wet Leg, Halsey and a bossa nova cantina band, it misses the trailer’s cracking ‘Call Me’ needle drop (despite the fact Kara wears a Blondie t-shirt). It’s symptomatic of a film that sometimes lacks oomph.

“Still, Alcock makes light work of an impressively imperfect hero and her performance is worth a watch alone.”
