Buckley won the Best Actress Oscar this year for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway, wife of Mescal’s William Shakespeare, in Hamnet, with the two Irish actors serving as the emotional core of the drama.
Now, it has been announced that they will be back together in the new film Hold On To Your Angels, which has been written and will be directed by Benh Zeitlin, best known for his Oscar-nominated debut film Beasts Of The Southern Wild in 2012.
Production will begin on the film in February 2027, and it will be set in Louisiana, following Mescal’s “hell-bound outlaw” and a “ferocious shepherd of lost souls” (Buckley), who fall in love as their bayou paradise drags them under.
Zeitlin has said: “Hold On To Your Angels is the most impossible love story I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve been dreaming of telling it since its hero, Pam Harper, walked into an audition for Beasts of the Southern Wild seventeen years ago. It’s a love letter to an endangered way of life – and a rallying cry for empathy across a fractured planet.”
NME awarded Hamnet four stars, noting: “Zhao’s direction is never quite naturalistic and occasionally feels heavy-handed: in one scene, we see William considering suicide by the River Thames while reciting Hamlet’s familiar “to be or not to be” soliloquy.”
“But there’s no denying this is a powerful portrait of grief driven by a shattering performance from Buckley, who’s currently frontrunner to win Best Actress at this year’s Oscars. The Academy won’t struggle to find an isolated clip of her technical and emotional brilliance, but Hamnet really needs to be experienced in full. It’s a harrowing reminder that tragedy is stalking all of us and can’t be shouldered alone.”
Buckley also recently starred in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride!, while Mescal is set to play Paul McCartney in the hotly-anticipated quartet of Beatles biopics in 2028.
