While hosting SNL UK, Aimee Lou Wood poked fun at Sex Education and The White Lotus – check out clips below.
During her appearance on the show last night (May 2), Wood was quick to mention the two series she’s best known for, saying: “You might know me from Sex Education, the show that took the shame out of getting freaky.”
“Or,” she added, “perhaps you know me from The White Lotus, the show where a guy wanks off his brother and puts the shame right back in there.” Nodding to the reception she got from fans after starring in both, she also touched on her supposed relatability, saying she wanted to show a “different” version of herself.
“Ever since I got famous, all I ever hear is how relatable I am, how bubbly I am,” Wood explained. “But I’m here tonight to put those vicious rumours to rest, because, you know what, I’m a freak. I am a weird lady. I’m a Scorpio Moon for God’s sake. I once got a reading from an astrologer, and she said, ‘Sorry.’ That’s how intense my birth chart is.”
“Look, I know I may sound just like that fun Mancunian girl you lived in uni halls with,” she went on, “but I, Amiee Lou Wood, am a certified card-carrying goddamn weirdo.”
Before the episode aired, a promo clip saw Wood address a controversy joke made about her teeth on the American version of the show, after Sarah Sherman played a version of Wood’s White Lotus character Chelsea, with exaggerated false teeth.
At the time, Wood took to her Instagram Stories to respond to the sketch, which she described as “mean and unfunny”. SNL later contacted the star and apologised for the sketch. In the new promo, titled “Aimee Lou Wood Wipes The Slate Clean”, she spoke to the cast about wanting a fresh start on SNL, before noticing the show’s cast members covering their mouths.
Thinking they were all wearing false teeth, Wood tells them off, before the comedians reveal that they have all grown moustaches to emulate the popularity of cast member Paddy Young. She is then given her own moustache and the group hug.
Recently, the creator of the original SNL, Lorne Michaels, shared his vision for the British version of his show.
“My design for it was that it would be the cooler of the two shows, and it would be the thing they beat us up with. That it’s smarter, funnier, more original, and it had to be that,” he said (via Variety). “It had to be its own thing. It couldn’t be an imitation of what we do.”
Foo Fighters recently appeared as the show’s first international music guests. Click here to watch them perform the tracks ‘Child Actor’ and ‘Caught In The Act’.
