There’s often a lot of fuss made about a song’s build-up: the slow climb from verse to pre-chorus to (hopefully) explosive hook. But what if there wasn’t a journey? What if you simply started with the heart of the matter?

That’s the approach these songs take, introducing key melodies and refrains from the jump. Intriguingly, many of these tracks share a similar theatricality — I guess there’s something about spoiling yourself that just screams drama. On the flip side, a handful of these songs are more calm and meditative, using the instant intro of their choruses to softly pull listeners in. Either way, these tracks are are simple but effective reminders of the power of even a small subversion of expected form.
