Rob Reiner’s son Nick arrested following “apparent homicide” of the Hollywood director and his wife Michele

Rob Reiner’s son Nick has been arrested following the “apparent homicide” of the beloved Hollywood director and his wife Michele.

Reports emerged yesterday (Sunday December 14) that the 78-year-old filmmaker and his 68-year-old wife, photographer Michele Singer-Reiner, had been found dead inside their home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles.

The LAPD later confirmed that they were investigating the deaths as an “apparent homicide”, and multiple outlets including TMZ and People reported that the two had suffered wounds consistent with a knife attack.

At a press conference last night, Alan Hamilton, the chief detective of the LAPD, said that the investigation was still ongoing and family members would be interviewed.

Now, both BBC News and the New York Times have reported that the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested in connection with their deaths.

According to the BBC, Nick – who also works as a screenwriter – is in custody on $4million (£2.9million) bail.

The LAPD have not yet formally announced his arrest, however online jail records from the LASD Inmate Center reveal that he was arrested on Sunday, and charged today (Monday December 15). No information about any criminal charges are publicly available at time of writing.

As highlighted by the New York Times, both Rob and Nick worked together on a film called Being Charlie, which was loosely based on the latter’s early life and his past struggles with substance abuse and homelessness.

While the two previously confirmed that the project was not autobiographical, Rob did say in a 2016 interview on BUILD Series that the movie brought them “closer together” and “forced me to see more clearly, and understand more deeply, what Nick had gone through”.

Nick would later tell People about his sobriety, and the two appeared together most recently at the red carpet for Rob’s film Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. That film was the long-awaited follow-up to the cult classic 1984 with much loved mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which was Reiner’s directorial film debut.

Other films of his included Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990), and the Oscar nominated A Few Good Men (1992).

He also had acting roles in the likes of Ephron’s Sleepless in Seattle, Postcards From the Edge, The First Wives Club, The Wolf of Wall Street, New Girl and The Bear.

Michelle Singer-Reiner worked as a photographer, and the two got married in 1989 after meeting on the set for When Harry Met Sally. She also worked on the MysteryDisc video games and on the 1990 film Misery – which was based on the Stephen King book and directed by Rob.

Since news broke of their deaths, countless tributes have poured in for Rob and Michele Reiner, including from Stephen King who said that he was “horrified and saddened” by the news, and described the director as a “wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker”.

I’m horrified and saddened by the death of Rob Reiner and Michele. Wonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker (including 2 of mine). Rest in peace, Rob. You always stood by me.

Paul McCartney also shared an image of him and Rob together, and wrote: “What a tragedy the death of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, is. It is so shocking in many ways but for me especially so, because over the last year I had been working with him. He directed me in Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.”

The Beatles legend went on to describe him as “such an upbeat, lovable man”, and added: “Life can be so unfair and this tragedy proves it. His father, Carl Reiner, was a great humourist before him and Rob followed in his dad’s footsteps doing a terrific job making many great films.

“I will always have fond memories of Rob and the idea that he and his wife will no longer be in the world with us is heartbreaking.”
