Shrek Is Getting A Limited Edition Liquid-Filled Anniversary Edition

Shrek turns 25 this year, and to mark the esteemed ogre’s anniversary, the film’s soundtrack is getting a special vinyl reissue. The new edition, which comes out on August 21st, is a “Swamp Juice” liquid-filled pressing, paying homage to Shrek’s beloved home and habitat.

When it came out in May 2001, Shrek was one of the first big-budget animated films to license music instead of using pre-written material (a la Hercules). The decision was both a commercial and critical success, and the soundtrack certified double platinum and received nominations for a Grammy and a BAFTA. It featured a decade-spanning mix of pop and alternative rock, and many of the songs across the tracklist—specifically Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and “I’m a Believer,” and Rufus Wainwright’s “Hallelujah”—are now indelibly associated with the film.

Shrek follows the titular ogre (Mike Myers), who loves his swamp and hates intruders into his peace. When a collection of displaced fairytale characters (including the goofy Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy) take over his land, he travels to his kingdom’s capitol to appeal to Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), who strikes him a deal: rescue the princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a dragon’s lair, and he’ll get his swamp back. Shrek was a bonafide hit, premiering in competition at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and winning the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So far, it has spawned four full-length sequels: Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010), as well as multiple short films, Christmas specials, and spin-offs like Puss in Boots. The next proper sequel, Shrek 5, is due out in 2027.

The vinyl reissue is part of a series of anniversary programming celebrating Shrek’s legacy. In May, the film returned to select theaters across the country for a limited engagement. Universal also shared more information about the highly-anticipated Shrek 5—the film features original leads Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, as well as new cast members like Zendaya and SNL’s Marcello Hernandez.
