The beloved Assassin’s Creed video game series focuses on a secret war between two shadowy factions: The Knights Templar want to control humanity to ensure its survival while the Order Of Assassins fight for free will. Since the franchise launched in 2007, the games have covered nearly 2000 years of history as a range of different characters “battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”

A live-action adaptation was first announced back in 2020 but the project was only green-lit in July. Roberto Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo) will head up the show.

According to Deadline, Toby Wallace is set to star as one of the two leads of Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed adaptation. Wallace is best known for playing Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones in Danny Boyle’s Pistol and has just wrapped shooting Euphoria season three after joining as a series regular.

The report goes on to say that the British-Australian actor will be playing an original character that doesn’t appear in the video games, much to the disappointment of fans.

“For the love of god use the story from the games! Why do theses studios make video game movies/tv, do their own story, flop and then wonder why none of the fans likes it,” wrote one gamer on Reddit.

Filming for the Assassin’s Creed Netflix series will start next year in Italy. Video game developers Ubisoft have said they’re going to be heavily involved in the adaptation to “deliver an experience that speaks to the heart of what fans love about Assassin’s Creed, while introducing its unforgettable worlds and timeless themes to new audiences worldwide.”

An Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016. A sequel was planned but was scrapped due to bad reviews and poor box office performance.

In other news, Grand Theft Auto 6 fans have been fooled by an AI-generated video “leak” that features new protagonist Lucia exploring the refreshed Vice City.
