Fans and contemporaries around the world have been paying tribute to Lynch, after his family announced his death via his Facebook page. “It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time” the statement read.
“There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole’. It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way”.
The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower dating back to around 1240, and is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The building has provided musical tributes to celebrities in the past, playing the Friends theme tune for the passing of Matthew Perry in 2023, and last year One Direction’s ‘You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful’ in honour of Liam Payne.
As his fans mourn his passing, Lynch’s family invited people to join them in a “worldwide group meditation” taking place later today (January 20).
Legendary director Steven Spielberg described him as “an original and unique voice”, recalling their work together on The Fabelmans. In an Instagram tribute, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos revealed Lynch was planning a new series for the streamer “filled with mystery and risks”.
The gaming industry has also shown its respect, with luminaries such as Hideo Kojima and the makers of the game Life Is Strange posting about the director’s influence.
