Malcolm In The Middle star Frankie Muniz has opened up about his time as a child star, and said he feels saddened about the sacrifices his family made for his career.
The actor and race car driver, who is now aged 38, spoke about his time on the hit ‘00s show with Michael Rosenbaum, as part of an interview with the Inside of You podcast.
In the discussion, he opened up about how he got his big break on the sitcom, as well as how he has come to realise the impact it had on his family.
In the discussion, he explained how his parents separated before he landed the role, and he moved in with his mother in New Jersey and his sister went to live with their father. Eventually, she moved in with Muniz and their mother, but his landing the role in Malcolm In The Middle led to the family structure being disrupted again.
“She finally moved up, and it wasn’t like a month later that I got Malcolm, and we moved to L.A.,” he explained, discussing his sibling (via Entertainment Weekly). “She [was] like, you’re not moving. So she stayed with my grandparents in New Jersey and we moved to LA. So it’s this really weird dynamic to look at now.”
He continued: “It actually makes me a little bit sad to realise that me following my dream and the things that I got to do affected every single member of my family. Right?”
Muniz went on to say that the past year has been “the first time I thought about the past enough to think about the sacrifice that people made, and it made me really sad.” He also gave his thanks to his grandparents for being willing to raise his sister while he moved to Los Angeles.
“The fact that they were so willing to help out and do whatever they could do for us to be available to go where I needed to go to do what I needed to do. It’s a realisation I actually had this year,” he said. “I’m happy that I have people in my life like that, but it’s just a crazy thought that without that support, probably none of that happens.”
Malcolm In The Middle began in 2000 and ran for seven seasons. Before it ended in 2006, it led to Muniz earning an Emmy nomination and two nods at the Golden Globes.
The actor also went on to star in projects including Deuces Wild (2002), Big Fat Liar (2002), Agent Cody Banks (2003), and Racing Stripes (2005).

In more recent years, he has since appeared on shows such as Arrested Development and Preacher, and has been working alongside fellow Malcolm In The Middle star Bryan Cranston, trying to develop what may be a revival series.
Last year, Cranston opened up to NME about the Emmy award-winning series, which ran from 2000-2006, saying: “I have a greater appreciation of even what the show is and was and would love to dive in with all of those people again to do it. And in that same sense, that was 2014 or whatever when we really started talking about it.”
“So many shows have been rebooted, and so many shows shouldn’t have been rebooted,” he added. “So I don’t want to be like just one of those shows – it has to make sense, it has to be good. So we’ll see.”
