Keira Knightley has said she was “taken down publicly” after her time in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise.
The actress, who appeared in the franchise from 2003-2007 playing Elizabeth Swann, reflected on her experiences during a new interview with The Times, describing it as “a very confused place in her head”.
She reflected in particular about how she was “taken down publicly” by the films, despite the fact they also made her into a household name – and how she was “seen as shit” for taking part in the films.
“It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time,” Knightley began.
“I was seen as shit because of them, and yet because they did so well I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for. They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of, and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head.”
She went on to say she wouldn’t return to a franchise again. She continued: “The hours are insane. It’s years of your life, you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, what you’re filming.”
Knightley went on to say that she’s become more particular about her film choices after becoming a mother to her two daughters.
“I couldn’t go job to job [abroad] now,” Knightley continued. “I wouldn’t be in any way fair to them, and I wouldn’t want to. I’ve chosen to have children, I want to bring them up, so I’ve had to take a major step back.”
She also made similar comments when asked about returning to the franchise last year.
Meanwhile, Richard Curtis recently said he would cast someone older than Knightley to play her role if he made Love Actually today.
In the 2003 rom-com, Knightley was 18 years old when she played the part of Juliet, who married Peter, played by a 26-year-old Chiwetel Ejiofor. Mark meanwhile, who is in love with Juliet, was played by a 30-year-old Andrew Lincoln.
Knightley will next star in the Netflix spy thriller Black Doves, which lands on the streaming service in the UK and US on December 5.
