Ryan Murphy has said that he is open to reviving Glee in a new form, after seeing the musical series find a new generation of fans.
Murphy co-created the musical comedy-drama with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, with the show running for six seasons between 2009 and 2015.
Speaking to People at the New York premiere of his new FX series The Shards, Murphy said that he had noticed that younger audiences have discovered Glee, giving it a renewed sense of relevance.
“That show is interesting because it’s come back around,” he said. “So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show’.”
“My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity’,” he continued. “So yeah, I love that show, and I loved what it became and what it meant to so many people.”
Glee followed the members of the New Directions show choir at the fictional William McKinley High School, combining musical performances with storylines covering sexuality, race, bullying and relationships.
The original cast included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Naya Rivera and Kevin McHale, while it boasted an impressive list of guest stars, including Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Olivia Newton-John.
In 2010, the Glee cast overtook The Beatles to become the non-solo act with the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100, while their version of Journey‘s ‘Don’t Stop Believin” helped introduce the 1981 track to a new audience.
Last year, Chappell Roan apologised to ‘Gleeks’ after joking that one of its Christmas instalments was the “worst episode of Glee“, before recreating one of the show’s famous slushie scenes.
Murphy was speaking ahead of the premiere of The Shards, his new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel about a serial killer that targets the students at an elite private school. It premieres on FX and Hulu on August 5 in the US, before arriving on Disney+ in the UK the following day.
