According to a report from Deadline, Hurst tore a bicep last month while filming God Of War. He’s since undergone surgery but will take between four and six months to recover, so Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television bosses have decided to recast the role.

According to sources, “Hurst’s full recovery is a priority but the period required for it was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate, leading to the difficult decision to recast the role.” Four episodes of the first season of God Of War had been completed at the time of his injury, and will now need to be reshot when production begins in mid-October.

Hurst, who played Kratos’ rival Thor in the 2022 game God Of War: Ragnarok, was announced as Kratos in January with Atreus played by Callum Vinson. Kratos’ voice actor Christopher Judge congratulated Hurst on the role. “You’re gonna be great,” he wrote on social media shortly after the news was confirmed. Back in 2023, he criticised rumours Dave Bautista was in talks to play the part.

Congrats Ryan!!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!! https://t.co/H9pYahlpoU

The cast for the live action God Of War also includes Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as God Of Thunder Thor, Teresa Palmer as Thor’s wife Sif, Max Parker in the role of Heimdall and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Ed Skrein, meanwhile, will play main antagonist Baldur.

The show will take influence from the two most recent games (2018’s God Of War and Ragnarok). “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” reads an official synopsis.

Prime Video has already ordered two seasons of God Of War, with Ronald D. Moore as showrunner. There’s currently no release date for the show and Moore previously angered fans by admitting he hadn’t actually played the video game series.

In other news Deborah Ann Woll, the star of God Of War: Laufey, has responded to the backlash over a female protagonist leading a new God Of War game.
