Earlier this month, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that from January 2028 they would no longer be releasing games as physical discs. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” they explained in a blog post.

Over the weekend, God Of War: Laufey game developers Sony Santa Monica announced that the title would be getting a physical disc release, confirming it would be out before the end of 2027.

God Of War: Laufey was announced earlier this year, and the game will follow Kratos’ wife through the afterlife of the gods following her death at the start of the 2018 God Of War reboot.

However, the series will return to regular hero Kratos in the future. “While [God Of War: Laufey] is a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore [with] all these different characters in there,” explained studio boss Cory Barlog in an interview. “But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.” Sony Santa Monica also took to X to explain that “Kratos is [still] the God Of War,” and they have “many more stories to tell with him.”

PlayStation’s decision to skip physical game releases has been met with backlash from fans and creators. Hideo Kojima said the move was “really sad” and “frightening” while others are worried about ownership after Sony announced it would be removing more than 500 movies from player’s libraries after a rights agreement expired. A petition asking Sony not to “kill the disc” already has more than 300,000 signatures

In other news, Dragon Age creator David Gaider doesn’t think any new games in the long-running fantasy series will be made following the flop of 2024’s Veilguard.
