Director Kane Parsons has confirmed that bonus footage from Backrooms will be released on YouTube this week.

The psychological horror has become a cultural phenomenon since its debut in May, and follows on from a web series by Parsons, who rose to prominence as a YouTuber. The story follows a furniture store owner (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who discovers a dimension of liminal spaces accessed through the store’s basement alongside his therapist (Renate Reinsve).

As well as attracting acclaim, the film has grossed over $363million (£271million) worldwide on a reported budget of just $10million (£7.47million).

Earlier this month, it was confirmed a special extended cut of the film called Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition would be released in cinemas, which includes 15 minutes of extra footage, and now Parsons has revealed that the bonus footage will hit YouTube this week (via DiscussingFilm).

Amid the success of Backrooms, Parsons recently responded to claims that he had acted as a “ghost director” on the film, which means making decisions on set while another person is credited and gives instructions to the crew.

Using humour, the director said: “This is actually all true. They don’t tell you this, but 96 per cent of all movies released in North America and Europe are actually directed by the same person. They call him ‘The Older Gentleman.’ He has had all of Hollywood in a chokehold for decades now.

“They make you sign over all of your intellectual property, life rights, and genetic information to him when you enter the industry. He loves movies.”

Cast member Mark Duplass also responded, saying to one person spreading the rumours: “Hmmm, with all due respect I don’t remember seeing you on set. When I was there, Kane was 100 per cent in control. More so than many directors 3x his age.”

Elsewhere, last month Parsons weighed into the debate around AI in cinema, labelling it “cultural and economic rot”. The film’s soundtrack is also getting a vinyl release.

In NME’s four-star review of Backrooms, we said: “Backrooms vibes-based momentum won’t be to everyone’s taste. For some there’ll be too much explanation and for others, too little. But it’s an intriguing, memorable creation with the power to rattle, as Parsons lurks in the intersection between dread and delirium. Well worth exploring.”
