The ending of Dutton Ranch season one explained: do Beth and Rip get a fresh start?
At the end of Dutton Ranch season one, Beth and Rip survive an attack on their ranch, but Carter is kidnapped and Rob-Will is found dead.
The finale reveals the full extent of the criminal operation surrounding Beulah Jackson and the 10 Petal ranch. What began as a rival ranching feud has become something much more dangerous, involving fentanyl, cross-border smuggling and Mariano Reyes.
Mariano, the “El Padrino” of the title, is Joaquin’s biological father. He was once connected to Beulah and the 10 Petal, but has since become a powerful figure with cartel ties in Mexico.
After Joaquin calls him for help, Mariano arrives in Texas and quickly takes control of the situation. He knows about the drugs connected to 10 Petal and makes it clear that Beulah no longer has the power she thinks she does.
Beth and Rip, meanwhile, realise they have stumbled into a much bigger criminal network.
The conflict comes to a head when Mariano sends men to attack Beth and Rip’s ranch. Rip, Beth, Everett, Azul and Zachariah fight them off, with Azul injured but surviving the shootout.
After Mariano orders Joaquin to kill him, Rob-Will is later found dead. Joaquin is seen afterwards in an emotional state with a gun, strongly suggesting he may have carried it out, but the finale leaves just enough doubt for season two.
The most important cliffhanger comes with Carter. By the end of the episode, he has been abducted, leaving Beth and Rip facing their worst fear: that the life they built in Texas has put their family directly in danger.
Beth and Rip may have survived the finale, but Dutton Ranch ends with Carter in danger, Rob-Will dead and the family’s attempt at a fresh start in Texas collapsing into another cycle of violence.
