Yesterday (May 28) Modern Warfare 4 was officially revealed as the 2026 entry in the long-running shooter series with a cinematic trailer that started with North Korea launching a missile strike on South Korea.
Modern Warfare 4 will launch October 23 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. However the new Call Of Duty won’t be playable on either the PS4 or the Xbox One.
Following that reveal, Activision confirmed that Call Of Duty: Warzone, a free-to-play multiplayer spin-off, will be using Modern Warfare 4 as the foundation for Warzone when the game launches later this year, so PS4 and Xbox One players won’t be able to continue playing.
Player progression and any content purchased with COD Points will carry over to supported platforms via a linked Activision account, Activision has confirmed.
Ahead of that, Activision will be removing Warzone from the PS4 and Xbox One digital stores on June 4. On June 25, the Warzone in-game store will be removed from both platforms, meaning you won’t be able to buy COD Points or any new content. When Call Of Duty: Warzone season one launches later this year, Warzone will be unplayable on the PS4 and Xbox one.
The news has received a mixed response from fans. “I think people tend to forget that the PS4 and Xbox One are 13 YEAR OLD consoles, they should have been dropped years ago. I’m surprised it took this long,” wrote one Reddit user. “You’d be surprised how many people are still on old gen consoles,” replied another, with others pointing out that it’s getting more and more expensive to upgrade due to price hikes.
It’s already been confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will only be available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles, with both the PS6 and Xbox’s ‘Project Helix’ rumoured to launch at some point next year.
In other news, the soundtrack to Fallout season two is getting a limited-edition vinyl release.
