Announced in 2024, Paranormal Activity: Threshold was being created by Darkstone Digital and had been set to launch this year. A playable demo was made available at PAX East in March but in a new update, Darkstone Digital has confirmed the entire project has now been scrapped.

“It’s no secret that game development means constant change and challenges especially as a solo indie. It became clear that the game needed more time to ensure it was the best it could possibly be. [Publishers] DreadXP stood by my need for more time and, together, we made a request to Paramount for a time extension,” explained creator Brian Clarke.

“Sadly, Paramount did not agree to extend development. This left me with two choices: Rush through development and release a sub-par product I would not be proud of or request we go our separate ways. I chose the latter. Proudly, DreadXP stood by me every step of the way and we parted ways with Paramount amicably. It was an honor to even be considered to work on an IP I love so much.”

I have a very important announcement everyone. Please have a read. Thank you all for your ongoing support of my work and love for indie games as a whole. pic.twitter.com/kmCS3t3BTq

Survival horror game Threshold was set within the Paranormal Activity universe and would have featured multiple timelines, different endings and a reactive game engine that was designed to make every playthrough different. The game’s Steam page has already been taken offline.

“Daniel and Jessica Stewart have decided to remodel their first home. Old and dilapidated, they begin to record the adventures of their renovation, but the couple soon discovers their new home hides much more than asbestos and faulty wiring,” reads an official description of the game. “As they dig deeper into the mysterious house, their excitement turns to concern when they uncover strange markings and items hidden within the walls. The more time they spend there, the clearer it becomes that they are not the home’s only occupant. Sinking deeper into the influences of a dark presence, Daniel and Jessica are unprepared for the horrifying events that follow.”

Last year, a new Paranormal Activity film was confirmed, with The Conjuring director James Wan on board as producer.  “I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying,” said Wan in a statement. “I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.”

In other news, Nintendo has apologised after confirming the Switch 2 is getting more expensive around the world.
