Ryan Reynolds has said that another Deadpool solo film is unlikely to be on the cards going forward.

The wisecracking anti-hero is reportedly set to make an appearance in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday alongside Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd and Letitia Wright.

Speaking in a new interview with Sunday Today about the future of Deadpool, Reynolds suggested that the character’s future will be primarily as a “supporting character” going forward and a fourth solo film is now unlikely.

“I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to centre him again,” Reynolds said, revealing Deadpool’s life as a big screen main character might be over. “He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”

His latest comments reflect previous comments he made in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which Reynolds said he was leaning towards not making another standalone Deadpool movie because “centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”

At the time he also said that he would love for the character to cross paths with the Avengers or the X-Men without having to join either group.

He added: “Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humour works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

Reynolds first played Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, in 2016’s eponymous film, as well as 2018’s Deadpool 2 and 2024’s hugely successful Deadpool & Wolverine.

Avengers: Doomsday, meanwhile, will see Downey return to the Marvel Universe, having previously bowed out as his character Tony Stark/Iron Man in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. This time, however, he is playing a villain, Doctor Doom, who will be the main antagonist of the movie.

The film’s release date was previously moved from May 2026 to December 18, giving the production extra time to finish up but leaving fans impatient. One of the film’s cast, Alan Cumming, previously confirmed the return of his X-Men character Nightcrawler in the film.

Also in Avengers: Doomsday are Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn as the Fantastic Four, as well as Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, who will return as the X-Men characters Charles Xavier and Magneto.
