Why isn’t Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan returning for ‘The Pitt’ season three?

The Pitt season two has come to an end, but why will Dr. Samira Mohan not be returning for season three? Find out below.

Season one of the acclaimed HBO Max show premiered in January last year and followed Noah Wyle’s Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch and his emergency room team at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center as they navigated a hectic 15-hour shift in real time, tackling overdoses, heart attacks and personal struggles amid a strained healthcare system.

The second season launched in January, with the finale arriving this week (April 16). Since the launch of HBO Max in the UK, the show has finally been available to watch legally in the country, with episodes currently being released onto the service on a weekly basis.

The show was created by John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill of ER fame, and it has been widely praised by critics for its relentless pacing and authenticity. Season two to date sites on a 98 per cent rating on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes

It was also named as one of NME’s best shows of 2025, noting: “Grisly emergencies, unruly patients, fresh interns, grief, PTSD and an uncomfortably realistic portrayal of all-too-familiar tragedies all came together to form one of the most intense and bingeable series in recent memory.”

Why isn’t Supriya Ganesh’s Dr. Samira Mohan returning for The Pitt season three?

It has been confirmed that Dr. Mohan, a medical resident that was a major character in both of the first two seasons, would not be returning for season three.

The news took many fans of the show by surprise, as the character was not killed off or given a storyline reason why she could not return by the finale of season two, but showrunner R. Scott Gemmill recently gave an explanation for the decision to TV Insider

“I think Mohan’s just not going to be working this shift,” he said. “That’s simple as that probably.”

The nature of the show means that each season covers one 15-hour shift in real time, and Gemmill continued: “The reality of the hospital is that people come and go. And we’ve known that since we started. And it’s one of the things, it’s good and it’s bad. It’s good because it keeps things fresh and it also makes it feel like a real working environment. It’s bad because we lose people, characters that we have grown to love, but that’s just part of the process. So we know that eventually a lot of people will come and go, and that’s just going to be the nature of the show.”
