Lena Dunham has said she felt “like a ghost” while dating Jack Antonoff, while seemingly referencing his relationship with a “teen pop star” rumoured to be Lorde.

In her new memoir Famesick, the Girls creator opened up on her relationship with Jack Antonoff. The pair dated from 2012 to 2017.

Dunham claimed Antonoff became “ensconced” in their apartment’s recording studio with a certain young pop star that many have guessed to be Lorde. The Kiwi singer-songwriter enlisted Antonoff to produce her sophomore album ‘Melodrama‘, which was released in June 2017.

In the memoir, she also wrote that the popstar referred to her as “Aunt Lena”, adding that her “needs seemed as massive and complex as my own.” Dunham went on to recall finding the unnamed pop star “sprawled across our sectional couch, weeping into Jack’s lap as he told her that ‘your teens are for experimenting’ in a tone so comforting, it almost brought tears to my eyes. It had been so long since he’d spoken to me with that kind of expansive generosity.” “I was too oblivious to be jealous of [her],” the screenwriter recalls of the young pop star.

Dunham then told Antonoff that “perhaps their closeness was striking an odd note, that [the unnamed pop star] wanted something from him that he couldn’t give.” She went on to tell Antonoff that she felt “like a ghost” when she saw him and the popstar together – which Antonoff reportedly replied: “You’re just mad because she doesn’t want to be your friend.”

Dunham went on to add that “he was right”, admitting that “I had observed careful boundaries [in our relationship] … If I’d wanted to look, perhaps I may have seen that Jack was not observing them as closely as I was.”

In the same memoir, Dunham also accused her Girls co-star Adam Driver of “feral” behaviour, claiming that he threw a chair while they were practising lines together and punched a hole in the wall of his trailer.

Driver starred as Adam Sackler – a recovering alcoholic dating Dunham’s Hannah – in the iconic HBO series, which ran from 2012-2017.
