The sequel to 2023 movie The Super Mario Bros Movie, which itself was the second highest grossing movie of that year, saw the return of Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Bowser (Jack Black) in an all-new adventure which added Mario superfan Brie Larson and Donald Glover to the cast.

Despite poor reviews, the film has proved a hit with audiences, and as of today (Tuesday April 14) sits second in the worldwide 2026 box office (per Box Office Mojo), behind Chinese film Pegasus 3 with $640million (£472million). Given the Nintendo adaptation is relatively new to cinemas, it’s expected to take the top spot within the next week.

In third place is Project Hail Mary, the wildly successful sci-fi starring Ryan Gosling as a man on a mission to save the universe who forms a partnership with an alien with the same goal. The movie’s upbeat message, and adorable character Rocky, have propelled it passed $500million (£368million) worldwide, the biggest success yet for distributor Amazon MGM Studios.

The success of the Super Mario movies has led to other Nintendo properties being developed, with a movie based on The Legend Of Zelda in development. However, Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto recently shut down rumours of a film based on the game Super Smash Bros, despite character Fox McCloud crossing over to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

The character was voiced by Glen Powell and was introduced via interdimensional travel. In the video game world, he appears in the Star Fox series of games but only interacts with Mario in the crossover Smash Bros titles.

Elsewhere, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie soundtrack was recently announced as coming to vinyl. The music features “joyful references and respectful nods” to classic Nintendo compositions by Koji Kondo.
