Haunted by Bad Relationships — German Post-Punk Stalwarts Pink Turns Blue Debut Video for “Dancing With Ghosts”

Just leave me alone now to live my life
Could strive for happiness because this would be right

To sever ties with those who siphon our spirit is to unlearn a rhythm ingrained in our being—perhaps lifetimes deep. The narcissist, the energetic vampire, does not feed with fangs but with need; they pull, they press, they mold us into reflections of their own insatiable hunger. And yet, we linger, not out of love, but out of the illusion that we are the ones who can fill their void. To walk away is to confront our own fear of emptiness, to trust that in letting go, we do not lose love—we reclaim it, freed from the hands that strangled it.

The latest single from Pink Turns Blue, Dancing With Ghosts, takes us through this often painful process. This is the third offering from their forthcoming LP, Black Swan, set for release next month via Orden Records. With their last album and accompanying tour, Mic Jogwer (vocals, guitar), Luca Sammuri (bass) and Paul Richter (drums) have cleared pretty much everything you could wish for as a band. Now, they forge ahead with new music and a fresh perspective.

Dancing With Ghosts wrestles with the agony of severing ties, escaping a love that has turned suffocating. It’s a battle between lingering attachment and the desperate need for freedom. The forlorn ringing guitars, steady percussion, and frankness of their lyrics (bringing to mind Chameleons and The Cult), charts a journey from entrapment to self-liberation, stepping away from emotional dependency and toward self-discovery. Ghosts of the past beckon, but the narrator chooses to walk forward, reaching for light, for something beyond pain—an existence truly their own.

“Some relationships last a lifetime – and are not good for us at all,” says Jogwer. “They suck all our energy, never give, always take. And whatever we do, it’s never right and never good enough. And since it’s often our best friend, mother, or sister, it feels like we owe them something, but every time we try to do something good for them, we just feel miserable and used. There is no easy way out, because whatever we do, we lose. These spirits will haunt us forever unless we challenge them and eventually manage to leave them behind.”

Black Swan by PINK TURNS BLUE

Since their formation in 1985, the Berlin trio has continually refined their sound into something lean, luminous, and utterly fearless. Early releases like the seminal If Two Worlds Kiss positioned them within a lineage of post-punk innovators—including Joy Division and The Chameleons—but their creative vision remains defiantly forward-looking. They continue to chart new sonic territory, crafting music that resonates as profoundly today as it did in those tense final decades of the 20th century.

The new album and tour, both titled Black Swan, draw from the term for an unforeseen event, one that hindsight often recasts as inevitable, as though we could have been ready for it.

In 2025, Pink Turns Blue will take to the road, starting with April shows across Germany before venturing into North America, culminating in their appearance at the Tomorrow’s Ghosts Festival in Whitby, UK.
