Wholesome Actor’s “Psychotic” Transformation Frightens Co-Stars

An actor nicknamed the “Smiling Prince” is proving that he has what it takes to be a terrifying villain.

At the age of 24, the Malaysian singer-actor Nicholas Teo appeared in Smiling Pasta (2006). His role as the soft and charming male lead, He Qun, earned him the nickname “Smiling Prince.”

Now 42, Nicholas Teo is shedding his wholesome image for something a little darker. During an episode of the Chinese variety show Memories Beyond Horizon, the actor charmed (and alarmed) viewers by playing the role of a seemingly sweet man who was, more or less, the type of character fans would expect him to play. His character was in love with a woman (played by Xu Ruo Han).

On Memories Beyond Horizon, actors are judged by directors, producers, and fellow actors after competing in skits each week. The prize? A film contract. So, naturally, this was the perfect place for Nicholas Teo to break free from type-casting.

During the skit, the actor’s signature smile transformed into something far more sinister as the warmth left his eyes.

He became a total psycho who doesn’t take rejection well at all.

In the blink of an eye, the actor switched back and forth throughout the skit between doting and frightening.

Nicholas Teo’s castmates on the show praised his chilling performance.

Derek Yee (Hong Kong film director): …I feel that it’s quite scary. You look very gentle, but when you act as an obsessive character…

Ning Jing (Chinese singer-actress): You are really quite psychotic. (to Derek Yee) Do you have any psychotic roles? He is really suitable for it.

Derek Yee:  I think I can put him up for the challenge, it would be quite meaningful.

Hopefully, he’ll get his chance to bring a villain to life soon!
