The Hanged Man tarot card is all about hitting the pause button, surrendering to the moment, and diving deep into introspection. It’s a cosmic signal to hang back and let things unfold, pushing you to flip your viewpoint upside down. This card is a stark reminder that sometimes, you’ve got to make sacrifices to gain deeper insights or to realign your life’s priorities for the long haul.
The symbol of this pause and reflect takes center stage in Dry, the latest from Geneva Jacuzzi. The Los Angeles multimedia artist has long been established as a formidable reputation for her immersive performances that blend a wide array of masks, costumes, and confrontational elements with large-scale art installations. These events have become legendary, admired for their ability to transport audiences into a hallucinogenic realm of artistic expression. Her recordings, layered with catchy hooks and infused with a mysterious atmosphere, carry the distinctive lo-fi texture of 4-track tapes.
In the video for her new single, Dry, which channels retro-futuristic vibes into a rhythmically intense piece of retro synth that speaks to themes of disconnection and uncertainty. Accompanying the single is a striking black-and-white video directed by Jacuzzi (with camera work by David Zuckerman) that presents an inverted Jacuzzi, suspended in a setting that pays homage to the stark, angular aesthetics of German Expressionist film. One can easily envision this avant-garde number performed at the storied Kit-Kat Klub of Cabaret.
“I took a little break from writing music and when I sat down at home to record, ‘Dry’ was the first song to burst out,” she says. “The music came together so instantly it’s as if it had been waiting and perfecting itself for years in the ether. The chorus lyrics came that same week after I went on a date with Mike Judge and he never called me back (haha). I wasn’t upset or anything, but I had never been ghosted before and couldn’t help but equate modern love to an appliance you buy on the home shopping network.”

Geneva initially emerged from the last of the wild beaches in San Diego County; her art form found its direction when she arrived in Los Angeles in 2001. She formed and fronted synth-wave death-disco outfit Bubonic Plague, with members of The Warlocks and The Centimeters.
