Billy Fury’s ‘Wondrous Place’ Will Rerelease On 7” Vinyl

British rock ‘n’ roll icon Billy Fury first released the single “Wondrous Place” with his 1960 debut album The Sound of Fury, and now the track is set to be rereleased as a limited edition 7” single on vibrant colour vinyl. The single has been remastered for vinyl, and promises listeners “a nostalgic journey through the golden era of rock ‘n’ roll.” This year marks 65 years since Fury released his first single with Decca.

Moody and sleek, the lyrics of “Wondrous Place” are perhaps surprisingly sweet. “I found a place full of charms/A magic world in my baby’s arms/Her soft embrace like satin and lace/Wondrous place.”

“Wondrous Place” was written by Jeff Lewis and Bill Giant, who also wrote “Fountain Of Love” for Elvis Presley. The track was first recorded by American singer Jimmy Jones before Billy Fury released his version to U.K. audiences in September 1960. It reached only No.25 on the UK singles chart, but it held a place on the chart for nine weeks total, six of which were in the Top 40. While none of Fury’s singles ever reached number one on the charts, he had eleven top ten singles to his name and three top ten albums.

Around 40 years later, Fury’s version received a new bout of popularity when it was featured in a 1999 TV commercial for the Toyota Yaris.

In 2008, the song once again got a new life when it was recorded by the Last Shadow Puppets, the duo of Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane, as the B-side of their first single “The Age Of The Understatement.”
