“F*cking Ridiculous” Scene In New Netflix Series Annoys Viewers, Confuses Some

Recently, Netflix’s adaptation of a series titled 3 Body Problem was added to the site’s catalog on March 21.

The series is based on the Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the first of a trilogy about Earth encountering an alien civilization.  In 2023, the book was adapted into a series in China called Three-Body.

The Netflix series offers some differences from the book and previous adaptations, including the fact that the cast is multinational.  Another difference in one of the series’ mid-season episodes has become a source of annoyance and confusion for the viewers.

Episode five of the series, titled “Judgement Day,” sees the show’s protagonists preparing to stop a ship filled with worshippers of the slowly approaching alien race threatening Earth. The ship’s leader, Mike Evans, can speak to the alien species directly and has a hard drive with sought-after data on the soon-to-be invaders.

To stop the ship, the protagonists use Auggie’s (played by Eiza González) nano-fiber technology to slice into the boat horizontally in several places.

During the sequence, the viewer is taken between the perspective of those on the boat and those watching, showing the nanofibers cutting through everything on the ship, including the men, women, and children who are part of the worshippers.

Viewers of the show discussed this particular scene and presented some issues with how it unfolded in the show.

The ship scene in 3 Body Problem seemed somehow off.

“I just don’t get it. It was all so ridiculous. They prepped a trap and emphasized the presence of an ship pilot which clearly would recognised the rusty poles in his workplace doing the job he intend to do. And Auggie was still surprised that the construction they and especially she herself built killed everyone. What was your intention in the first place? You developed the technology. And in the next episode she was annoyingly sad about the trap she built by herself. It was all just annoying.

Let alone the idea of destroying everything in the boat to find “something something data” of which nobody knew how it was stored. Also, they destroyed a ship in one of the worlds most busy canals and they can search the wreck without anyone being concerned.

Also, again, they killed everyone on that ship after trying not to end it in a bloodbath.

Did i miss a specific plot that explains it?”

Others were just as confused, wondering why something so destructive was planned with the specific goal of collecting the hard drive in mind. The end of the sequence shows Thomas Wade discovering the hard drive, entirely undamaged by the wires and the subsequent fires.

The book explained more in-depth why this method was chosen, including the wires being placed to avoid damaging data and the fact that any damage could have been repaired with technology. One viewer thought the show’s method of showing this plan was to add shock value and create a more “memorable” scene.

However, more complaints surrounded Auggie’s characterization in the book versus the series, which has already been criticized. Book Auggie portrayed disgust at her technology being used for the plan, while the series’ seemed to be in a continual state of disbelief at her technology being used to kill children.
