Bethesda originally announced a next-gen update for Fallout 4 back in 2022, with a proposed launch date of 2023. It missed that window, but the studio has now confirmed an April 2024 release.

The free update will bring new quest Echoes Of The Past to Fallout 4, with players tasked with stopping The Enclave from “spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth”. Several new creation club items will also be introduced while a number of previously released items will be making their return, including Enclave weapon and armour skins, the Tesla cannon and the Hellfire power armour.

A makeshift weapon pack is also being launched on April 25. “Ever thought a piggy bank would make a great weapon in a pinch? This weapon pack includes a variety of unconventional objects that have been transformed into deadly weapons, such as: a baseball launcher, a nail gun and a piggy bank,” reads the announcement.

Bethesda also confirmed that Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 players would be able to download a free update for Fallout 4 later this month.

Also set to launch April 25, the next-gen update will include native console applications, performance mode and quality mode settings, as well as “stability improvements and fixes” alongside “increased resolutions”.

Bethesda went on to confirm that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One Fallout 4 players will also receive a free update featuring stability improvements alongside fixes for login and quest bugs while the update for PC players will include “widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, as well as fixes to Creation Kit and a variety of quest updates”.

The update will also make Fallout 4 Steam Deck Verified.

The news comes hot on the heels of Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of Fallout, which launched earlier this week.

In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Unlike fellow post-apocalyptic shows The Last Of Us and The Walking Dead, Fallout is a dark comedy that finds laughter in ludicrously terrible situations. Director Jonathan Nolan (Westworld) shows a deft understanding of the source material throughout – peppering each episode with references to Bethesda’s beloved video game series.”

In other news, EA Motive has denied reports it has shelved a Dead Space 2 remake due to poor sales of the first.
