The ‘Lungu Boy’ block party at LDN East in Canning Town saw Asake play his third studio album to fans, who received enjoyed free tooth gems, drinks and Nigerian suya food ahead of the record’s playback.
The duo arrived a couple of hours into the event, dancing from a balcony that overlooked the whole crowd. An emotional moment came when their collaboration ‘MMS’ came on and Asake and Wizkid hugged. Later into the playback, WizKid also praised the Nigerian neo-Fuji star and told him not to be humble.
Once ‘Lungu Boy’ was played in full, the DJ started playing seminal Afrobeats tracks. When WizKid’s 2014 breakthrough hit ‘Ojuelegba’ came on, the hypeman handed the Lagos star the microphone to sing a line from the song. Asake also sang ‘Lonely At The Top’ – a standout from his 2023 second album ‘Work Of Art’.

In a three-star review of ‘Lungu Boy’, NME said the album has “mega highs, but lots of filler too”, adding: “Although ‘Lungu Boy’ sees Asake still rewriting the rulebook on Afro-pop, you have to push through a lot of samey repeats of his past work before you get to the good stuff.”
In other news, Asake has been accused of mocking religion in his recent music video for ‘Only Me’, which caused outrage because he wore Christian regalia with a halo around his head while throwing money at his dancers. Muslim also TikToker Brother Kareem called out Asake for using a verse from the Surah Al-Ikhlas chapter of the Qu’ran.
