David Beckham has admitted he was “nervous” making his much publicised Netflix documentary, telling an interviewer that “people think they know everything about us – they don’t really.”

Beckham, which came out last year, won an Emmy earlier this week for Outstanding Documentary Series. The four-part programme explored the personal life of the football icon, including his relationship with wife Victoria.

Speaking at The Royal Television Society’s London Convention today (September 17), Beckham said he and Victoria were initially worried about making the documentary.

“I can’t lie, it worried me, it made me nervous, it made Victoria nervous,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

He explained: “I had to feel uncomfortable to make the documentary that we made. It was quite emotional…It was one of those things I knew if I was gonna make it, I was gonna make it once… It was really difficult.

“It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact I was going to make it but there was a few reasons why we wanted to make it. Through the pandemic, that’s when documentaries really exploded. It was coming up to the 10-year anniversary of my retirement and I thought: ‘Maybe this is the right time.’”

He continued: “I can’t lie, it worried me, it made me nervous, it made Victoria nervous. As much as people think they know everything about us, they don’t really. We don’t open the doors to our house but I knew it was the right time. I wouldn’t say I hated it, I just would say it was very difficult. We loved the results. But we were talking about things in my career that I’d never spoken about before.”

Beckham was also asked at the convention if Victoria was “taking notes” after it was revealed in August that there will be a new documentary series coming to Netflix with a behind-the-scenes exploration of her fashion and beauty businesses.

“She is an amazing woman,” Beckham replied. “A strong, driven, passionate person that has gone from being a Spice Girl to be respected in this industry which is very tough.

“She’s worked hard for the last 17, 18 years on her business and all of a sudden she’s having the success that she deserves. No one really sees what she does and the amount of work she does, she’s over everything — what people wear, everything that goes into her business she’s over every single piece.

“Once again, it was hard to convince her to do this but she was a big part of the process at Netflix…It’s an exciting time because she’s gonna do something that’s very special and people are going to see her personality and her work ethic,” he added.

In other news, last month Beckham admitted he made the director of his documentary “angry” after a clip went viral of Victoria in which David challenged her claim that she had “working class” roots.

The amusing moment quickly became a meme on social media, but the former England captain later revealed that it infuriated director Fisher Stevens (Succession).

“He was angry. He was angry with me. Fisher, I love Fisher. He apparently wanted me out the house, and that particular day was Victoria’s first day of filming,” Beckham explained during a recent appearance on the YouTube series Hot Ones.

“When she was sat there, the door was closed, and I was about to leave for the office, but I made a coffee, and then I saw a spare set of headphones so I put the headphones on and I heard Fisher talking about the whole, our parents and our upbringing,” Beckham continued.

“Then, all of a sudden, I heard her say, ‘We’re working class.’ In that moment, I was like, ‘OK,’ I headed to the door. I opened the door and I saw Fisher’s face, and he was not happy. So that’s really, I was like, ‘Be honest.’ The camera guys were so amazing because, literally panned over to me at the door and that was really a moment that kind of went viral. But Fisher was not happy.”
