The first trailer for the live-action Minecraft film has been released – and the Internet’s had some strong words.
Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, alongside names including Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge, A Minecraft Movie is set to be released on April 4, 2025.
Per a synopsis, the film will see “four misfits” being “suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination”.
“To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.
“Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative… the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
However, the reception so far has not been particularly positive, with one X/Twitter user writing: “the Minecraft trailer was so ugly I cried”.
“this may be the worst movie trailer i’ve ever seen,” another agreed.
Someone else suggested: “This movie should’ve been animated, I’m sure everyone would’ve loved it instead of hating it.”
“Jack Black is the only reason I’m gonna watch this movie, the rest of it looks like complete ass,” complained another person.

Black recently appeared in another video game series adaptation, Borderlands that also fared badly with critics and is heading to streaming just three weeks after its release.
It currently sits on a lowly 10% score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and has so far accrued only $18.6million (£14.3million) at the global box office, against a budget of over $120million.
It will now be released onto digital platforms on August 30, just three weeks after its theatrical release, an extremely fast turnaround, signifying an attempt to minimise damages.
The movie was first announced as far back as 2015, and was later confirmed to star Cate Blanchett as Lilith and Russian boxer-turned-actor Florian Munteanu as Krieg.
