Berlin-Based Post-Punk Project Curses Displays a Montage of Eerie Visions in Their Video for “Caviar”

The simple decisions in life

Fade away with time

Like the stab of a knife

Berlin-based project Curses has unveiled the video for their new melodic track Caviar from their upcoming album Another Heaven, which will be released later this year via the label Italians Do It Better.

Curses, also known as Luca Venezia, conjures various sounds, including cinematic New Wave, while weaving the baroque vibes of 1980s goth and melancholic Post-Punk with bass-heavy, high-energy electronic music. Caviar bursts on the palate as Luca’s melancholy vocals meld the macabre and the magical.

“Caviar is a decadent food; not loved by all, but adored by many,” says Luca. “Perceive and apply as you may.”

The lyrics are stripped down but pack a punch, painting a picture of raw emotional pain and deep longing. They center on a relationship that left more than a few scars, the kind that don’t fade with time. The speaker wrestles with betrayal and heartache, comparing the sting of love gone wrong to a knife wound that cuts deep. There’s a mournful tone, a sense of lost innocence that can’t be reclaimed, and a desperate plea for release from the heavy burden of unresolved emotions. The stark reality of inner turmoil is laid bare, with no frills to soften the blow. It’s a bitter acknowledgment that some wounds, especially those carved by love, never truly heal—they just fester in the dark corners of the heart, a constant reminder of what once was and what can never be again.

“At the time I was becoming a little exhausted from all the heavy-hitting drums and dark bassline’s from my DJ gigs, so we both started to write a lot of stripped-back, simple post-punk songs inspired by our early teenage days of playing guitar,” says Luca. “(We were) listening to the usual suspects like, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, but also the unraveling optimistic melancholic sounds of of bands like Demolition Group and The Cleaners of Venus.  But, I am always quickly over any boredom of DJing and club music, to be fair, it takes me stepping away into the more organic guitar sounds to love it all again. So, we re-approached the whole song’s drum structure and sound, went back into the heavier palette I love with club music like MCL and Razormaid, and Johnny Jewel elevated everything as a whole (especially the drums) into an absolute inter-dimensional stomper.”

The video, directed by LAST VEIL, is a chaotic collage of vignettes from Curses shows, fleeting moments from around the world, and eerie visions stitched together into a surreal montage. It’s like watching your life flash before your eyes, a montage of near-death memories, or the relentless replay of a lost love that refuses to fade. The imagery is haunting, capturing that strange blend of nostalgia and regret that lingers in the back of your mind, refusing to relent. Each scene blurs into the next, creating a disorienting yet hypnotic experience that mirrors the fragmented nature of memory.

The latest single, “Caviar,” features Dame Bonnet on bass, with production credits from Curses and Johnny Jewel.

Curses has always been a shapeshifter, effortlessly navigating the labyrinth of genres with a mastery that feels almost supernatural. At one moment, he’s channeling the brooding romance of New Wave, and then the next, he’s diving into the stark intensity of post-punk or the raw pulse of early electronic body music. Over the years, he’s released two full-length albums on Dischi Autunno, a limited edition LP with Parisian fashion powerhouse Saint Laurent, and even crafted soundtracks for video campaigns by Dior and Raf Simons/Calvin Klein.

With a new album set to drop later this year on the revered Italians Do It Better label, Curses continues to defy expectations. The upcoming season of the witch is to be drenched in his signature ghostly guitars and haunting vocals, once again proving that he can bend genres to his will with uncanny grace.
