Eminem has teamed up with fellow Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron for his new single “Tobey”, released ahead of his upcoming album “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)”.

The track opens with BabyTron putting his own spin on the Spider-Man origin story, rapping “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me, it was a goat”. Big Sean then takes over the second verse, making references to Star Wars, his son Noah, and his collaborative album with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne.

“I really was watchin’ the throne / N**gas ain’t turnin’ me down, when my baby asleep, only time that I’m watchin’ my tone / We don’t want chips with a chip on our shoulder / If he Obi-Wan, then I gotta be Yoda,” Big Sean spits.

He also shouts out Lyrical Lemonade founder Cole Bennett, who directed the “Tobey” music video[3][5]. Eminem closes out the track with a verse touching on Tobey Maguire, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”, and former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Big Sean and BabyTron sound too much alike I couldn’t differentiate who was who. Eminem was nice. It was a fine song. Tobey is a strange choice for a second single though. And I kept waiting for the beat to drop. Felt more like a music score from The Dark Knight.

Fans have been quick to praise the song, with one tweeting “Big Sean just dropped [the] hardest verse he’s ever had. Eminem never misses”. However, some felt Eminem’s verse was a bit short, with one person commenting “It felt like a Big Sean song”.

“Tobey” follows the controversial lead single “Houdini”, which seemingly referenced the 2020 shooting incident involving Megan Thee Stallion[3]. Big Sean also has a new project on the way, his first since 2020’s “Detroit 2”.
