Bright lights and conversations.

My mind, and this sensation.

The hangman’s gallows, a stark symbol in folklore, delves into the depths of human consciousness and societal structures. Representing the confrontation with mortality, it reminds us of life’s transient nature and the inevitability of death. Beyond its grim façade, the gallows symbolize a crossroads of fate and choice, prompting reflection on our deeds, chosen paths, and legacy. They embody the duality of human experience—justice and mercy, sin and redemption.

Folklore often explores themes of transformation and transcendence through the gallows, where characters confront their darkest fears and gain profound self-insight. Additionally, the gallows mirror societal values, norms, and ethical boundaries, challenging us to consider power structures and fairness in judgement. Thus, they become a space for moral contemplation, highlighting how our humanity is intertwined with our treatment of others, especially in moments of vulnerability.

Amidst the desolate beauty of the Sonoran Desert, Arizona’s own ‘death disco darlings,’ Paper Foxes, emerge with a striking blend of new wave and post-punk influences. Their music, characterized by an astute sense of melody and irresistibly danceable beats, resonates deeply with the spirit of the eighties -vividly captured in their new single, Gallows.

Frontman CJ Jacobson stands at the heart of this creation, channeling his meditations on anxiety while the band constructs an atmosphere of looming doom around him. The track features keytar synths, nostalgic guitars, and drums enveloped in gated reverb, all complemented by Jacobson’s resonant lead vocals. Terse electronic drums anchor a sophisticated interplay of murky guitars and vintage synths. The band’s unique blend is akin to the works of Twin Tribes, Depeche Mode, and Bauhaus.

Gallows may seem a somber subject to some, yet it serves as a reminder not to fear the hangman, but to evade his grasp.
