Rockstar Games has announced the “next evolution” of the fan-created Roleplay spin-off game from Grand Theft Auto Online.

Grand Theft Auto Online, a multiplayer spin-off from Grand Theft Auto 5, originally launched in 2013 and Rockstar Games have continuously updated the virtual world over the past 13 years including collabs with Dr. Dre, ScHoolboy Q and more.
One of the most popular ways of playing GTA Online is via one of the player-run Roleplay servers, which have their own rules and ongoing storyline that you can either take part on or watch via Twitch. “GTA Roleplay transforms Grand Theft Auto 5 into a community-run, multiplayer version of Los Santos where players create their own characters and tell their own stories in a dynamic, shared world,” explained Rockstar. “From civilians pursuing an honest living to criminals chasing their next score — and the player-run police force keeping them in check — every player helps shape the city, and every relationship matters.”
Now Rockstar Games has announced an official partnership with the nopixel server as part of the “next evolution” of GTA Online. “For years, we’ve seen the exciting possibilities and passion that the creator community brings to expand upon the worlds of Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA 5 Roleplay is one prominent example of how creators have brought their signature blend of creativity to these experiences and have pioneered new ways to play and watch our games,” they wrote in a blog post.
After “setting the standard” for Roleplay, the updated nopixel 5 “overhauls” the experience once more with “a reworked character customisation system which gives roleplayers more ways than ever to create characters as unique as their backstories, while new corners of the city — from the brand new Pixel Hotel & Casino to a six-block revamp of Cypress Flats — set the stage for new stories.”
“Today, we are proud to support nopixel – who have continually pushed the boundaries of GTA Roleplay through character immersion, modifications to the GTA 5 map, and a creative community of dedicated storytellers – with the official announcement of the nopixel 5 closed beta.” On September 8, invited players will be able to access the experience through the Rockstar Games Launcher. In 2023, Rockstar Games acquired Cfx.re, the team behind incredibly popular Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 roleplay servers. Collaborating with Cfx.re will generate “new ways to support this incredible community” as well as “improve the services they provide to their developers and players,” Rockstar said at the time. The following year T-Pain revealed he was working on Grand Theft Auto 6 – but had to step down from roleplay server nopixel because of the conflict of interest.
Rockstar Games has said that GTA Online will continue to be supported after the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
