Amyl & The Sniffers’ Amy Taylor joined Viagra Boys to perform their cover of John Prine’s ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ at FORWARDS Bristol 2026 – watch footage below.
The frontwoman appeared during the Swedish punks’ set at Clifton Downs yesterday (August 30), marking the first time they had performed their collaborative version of the song live.
“Against all odds honey you’re the big door prize,” Taylor wrote on Instagram after the performance, quoting a lyric from the song.
“Amyl joined Viagra Boys yesterday on stage in Bristol UK to do our cover of ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ live for the first time. Sebastian it was a pleasure to sing with you!”
Prine originally released ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ in 1999 as a duet with Iris DeMent and the title track of his 13th studio album.
Viagra Boys teamed up with Taylor to cover the song in 2020, with their livelier, lo-fi version later appearing on the band’s second album, ‘Welfare Jazz’.
“When I heard ‘In Spite Of Ourselves’ the first time, I instantly had an urge to do a cover of it,” frontman Sebastian Murphy explained at the time, adding that Taylor’s “unique voice” made her the obvious choice to sing DeMent’s part.
“Amy is a goddess of punk rock and a very important part of music today,” he continued. “I hope we can do more in the future!”
Taylor said Murphy introduced her to Prine through the collaboration. “Seb is a country music fan, and so am I, so it was really sweet to do a little nice duet,” she explained. “Now I’m a fan.”
Prine died from complications related to COVID-19 in April 2020, aged 73.
Viagra Boys released their fourth studio album, ‘Viagr Aboys’, in April 2025. NME described the record as “eclectic art-punk for the end times” and a “fun, funny and wise portrait of contemporary anxieties”.
Speaking to NME backstage at Reading Festival 2026 this weekend, the group revealed that work was under way on their next record.
“We’ve been writing for the past year in the studio, just recording demos and riffs,” Murphy said. He described the new material as “eclectic rock’n’roll”, but cautioned: “It’s too early to say.”
Taylor and her bandmates, meanwhile, recently announced the country-inspired concert film and live album ‘Truth Or Consequence’.
Filmed at Los Angeles’ El Coyote restaurant in April 2025, the project features country-influenced versions of Amyl & The Sniffers songs, two previously unreleased tracks and a cover of Slim Dusty’s ‘Lights On The Hill’. The accompanying live album is due to arrive on September 4.
It follows the band’s third studio album, ‘Cartoon Darkness’, which was released in 2024.
