There’s a ‘Bel-Air’ spin-off coming about Hilary Banks

A spin-off to the Peacock series Bel-Air, focusing on the character Hilary Banks, is currently in development.

Bel-Air was a reimagined take on the Will Smith sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which took a more dramatic approach to the story of a young boy from Philadelphia (Jabari Banks) who is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the affluent neighbourhood of Bel-Air, Los Angeles. T

he show ran for four seasons from 2022 to 2025, and was produced by Smith himself, who also appeared in the final episode. The show was a success for the streamer, with the first season becoming the most watched original series at the time.

Variety reports that the spin-off, titled Hilary, will see actor Coco Jones return to the role of social media influencer and talented chef Hilary, the eldest of the Banks’ children. The synopsis reads: “After accepting an unexpected job offer from celebrity chef Yvonne Durand, Hilary Banks impulsively moves to New York determined to prove herself beyond her Bel-Air connections — only to find that success, friendship and love in the city come with a cost she never anticipated.”

The project will be written and produced by Tracy Oliver, co-writer of Girls Trip, and produced once again by Will Smith. It marks the first time that a Peacock original series has received a spin-off.

Airing from 1990-96, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air launched the career of Smith, leading to his transition into movie stardom. The show featured his real-life musical collaborator, DJ Jazzy Jeff, as his character’s best friend. The producer was a fan of the reboot, saying in 2022: “I think more people are going to be talking about Bel-Air than the Super Bowl. It is that good. If I take myself out of it, this is mind-blowing. This might be my favourite show ever.”
