Former Svalbard vocalist Serena Cherry has announced her second solo album as Noctule – and it’s inspired by Elden Ring.

Post-hardcore band Svalbard formed back in 2011 and released four albums, but last year they announced they would be breaking up. “We never wanted to create music that was easy to pigeonhole, and I feel proud that we always stayed true to ourselves musically and never restricted our creativity within the genre rule book,” vocalist Serena Cherry said in a statement. “The support we received over the years as a band is something that I will carry in my heart forever. It’s a testament to the open-mindedness of the metal community that our sound and our outspokenness was embraced with open arms.”
During the Covid-19 lockdown Cherry wrote ‘Wretched Abyss’, a black metal solo album inspired by Skyrim and released it as Noctule. Last month, she announced a follow-up. ‘Extinguish Thy Flame’ is out September 25 and was written about Elden Ring.
Lead single ‘Lord Of Blood’ was “an ode to the towering, horned demigod Mogh” and new single ‘Goddess Of Rot’ is all about Elden Ring boss Malenia.
“In the fight to protect those you love, you can get destroyed beyond recognition. When love morphs into sacrifice that leads to inevitable loss. This is what my new song ‘Goddess of Rot’ is about – but specifically, it is about Malenia,” Cherry said in a statement.
“Malenia is one of the bleakest characters in the harsh game of Elden Ring. So of course, she is my favourite. She is fighting to protect her brother Miquella while slowly losing herself to Scarlet Rot. I deeply connected with her tragic story, so I wrote a song about Malenia to encapsulate the abandonment she suffers but also pay sonic tribute to the devastating power of her Scarlet Rot.”
“I think the unforgiving world of Elden Ring and the harsh sounds of extreme metal belong together,” she continued. “Metal is intense, relentless and uncompromising – so is Elden Ring. Writing a metal album about Elden Ring couldn’t be more fitting in my eyes.”
