Video gaming megafan The Weeknd’s latest obsession is an indie fishing game demo.

The Weeknd loves video games. He was the first headline act of Fortnite Festival and relaxes after stadium shows by playing Donkey Kong Bananza. On his alt Instagram account, he regularly shares photos of him with his favourite game developers and earlier this year, was invited to Capcom HQ to play Resident Evil Requiem early.
More recently, he’s been posting frequently about his love of the Persona series and even shared a potential tattoo of franchise star Tae Takemi, which blew up on social media.

Video game journalist Gene Park DM’d The Weeknd to talk about video games for The Washington Post and the R&B superstar used the opportunity to talk about his latest obsession – About Fishing.
Inspired by Shenmeu and Sega Bass Fishing, About Fishing is “a fishing mystery game that blends the calm, meditative rhythm of fishing with the quiet tension of discovery. It drifts between serenity and unease, as every catch brings you closer to uncovering what lies beneath,” according to the game’s description. “Every cast is a chance to uncover something unexpected. The fish you catch become your guides, helping you reach fragments of a long-forgotten mystery hidden beneath the surface. You can lose yourself in the calm of fishing or follow the clues the water offers.”
The indie game is set to launch later this year but a demo is available to play now via Steam.

“The atmosphere got me immediately,” The Weeknd told Park. “When I was young, my cousin had this collection of burned Sega Dreamcast discs, including Japanese releases I had never seen before,” including Shenmue, Seaman and Power Stone. “About Fishing gave me that feeling again. It reminded me of being a kid and finding games that felt like they came from somewhere else.”
After playing the About Fishing demo, The Weeknd reportedly invited the game’s creator Kevin Brown and composer Cameron Ginex to his office to play the game together, and they’re still in a group chat together. “[About Fishing] is beautiful and haunting in the right ways,” The Weeknd told The Washington Post. “The work looks simple at first, but there is a lot underneath it. [Brown] can make something feel terrifying, and then, in the same beat, make you laugh. That is someone in control of their craft.”
In other news, Grand Theft Auto 6 fans are getting an extended look at the highly-anticipated game later this month – but only if they’re subscribed to Netflix.
