Euphoria star Jacob Elordi has recalled his time working on season three of the HBO show.
The final season resulted in an unhappy ending for his character Nate who found himself at the mercy of Naz, a mortuary mogul who would stop at nothing to bury him.
“I think Sam [Levinson] brought me back to torture me,” Elordi said of the show’s creator during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest-hosted by his Euphoria co-star Colman Domingo. “It was like, six weeks of me just getting beat by a seven-foot guy. I was just running the whole time.”
Nate went on to suffer a gruesome fate, after being buried alive in a coffin. While he was able to breathe through a pipe to the surface as his wife Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) scrambled to save him, a rattlesnake slithered down the pipe and fatally bit him.
“I got locked in a coffin for two days straight with prosthetics and a fake tongue, and I couldn’t see out of my eyes,” Elordi recalled. “And then Sam put snakes into the coffin.”
Despite a boa constrictor being put in his coffin, Elordi said it was a friendly partner.
He added: “I was fine with it. He had a very nice personality. He was very docile and very sleepy. I don’t think he’d had a lot of sun, so I was kind of nudging him, trying to get him to get active and do the scene, because he was meant to be threatening.
“But he was like a little dog. He just kept curling up at my feet. He’d drop down the tube and then he’d sort of slither down and then he’d find a little warm spot.”
Elordi previously said the shocking death of his controversial character was a “cool way to go”, but it was “bittersweet” to leave the series.
Speaking in a HBO video going behind the scenes of the episodes, he described Nate as somebody “who’s made so many mistakes and so many dark choices, [so] it’s cool to see it all come to what it’s come to.”
Some fans, however, felt differently, saying “none of his punishments felt satisfying”. While some appreciated the shock value, others decried the “Looney Tunes” level violence he had been subjected to in place of any real character development.
Levinson’s teen drama had been away for four years, but returned to HBO Max in April for its third and final run, which concluded on May 31.
In a recent interview, Levinson confirmed that there would not be a fourth season. “In terms of the story we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me,” he said.
