Chris Avellone has worked as a writer and designer on a number of beloved video games, including Fallout 2, New Vegas, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Knights Of The Old Republic 2 and Divinity: Original Sin 2.

He appeared on Insider Gaming’s Access Granted podcast recently, where he was asked about the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of Fallout. And it turns out, he isn’t a fan.

“Seeing Walton Goggins in Fallout was amazing. He added a lot of legitimacy to the show. Ella Purnell too, she just has the right features and delivery for being a naïve vault dweller with a little bit of steel in there. Over time, I think people are realising that [game adaptations] are big business. I do kinda wish the writing for TV shows like that, where they’re mimicking a game, was elevated a little bit,” said Avellone, who praised the recent Cyberpunk animated spin-off Edgerunner. “That was really cool, I’ve got no problems there but sometimes I just wish the script quality on the Fallout TV show was a little higher. I feel embarrassed when I see some of the lines being done, but it’s a fun show.”

He went on to say that he “tried” to watch Fallout season two but had to stop. “I got to the beginning of episode three and couldn’t take it anymore. That show just wasn’t coming through for me. I’m over 50, I have to make oxygen choices for what to do with my time.”

Avellon said that he believes the issue is that Hollywood writers don’t respect the work done by the original game creators. “For some of them, it’s really easy to dismiss that work and go in their own direction. They just want to rush off and do their own take on what they believe it is. They want to make it their own. They want to be able to reference their own lore and context, because it’s just easier but it creates a lot of missed opportunities,” he added.

A third season of Fallout is currently in the works, with the show’s star Aaron Moten suggesting it could run for as many as six seasons.

The first season of Fallout was rewritten to avoid plot points that had been earmarked for Fallout 5, but boss Todd Howard has since confirmed the upcoming game will be influenced by the live-action adaptation. “Fallout 5 will be existing in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening. We are taking that into account.”

In other news, Blink-182 have announced a collaboration with Pac-Man to celebrate 25 years of their pop-punk classic ‘Take Off Your Pants And Jacket’.
